Mt. Binacayan Day hike: Travel guide, budget, and tips

Mt. Binacayan – one of the most hiked mountains and also one of the beginner-friendly mountains located in the province of Rizal. This mountain is famous because of the legend Bernardo Carpio. According to the Philippine mythology,  Bernardo Carpio has a great strength, trapped in between two great rocks in the Mountains of Montalban, The Mt. Binacayan and the Mt. Pamitian. He used his un-human power to separate these two mountains from crashing each other. So the river channel of Wawa dam was created. Mt. Binacayan should be on the bucket list of every mountaineer especially the newbie since Mt. Bincayan could be an appetizer for more mountain adventure awaits.

Mt. Binacayan was the second mountain I hiked since Mt. Pulag. We started to hike at exactly 6:15 in the morning and we arrived at the first peak at around 7:45 AM. There are a lot of photo ops at every stop over so the hike duration took longer than usual three hours. We arrived at the summit at around 9:45 AM. The estimated time to reach the summit is about 3 hours but we hiked for almost 4 hours. The view is too beautiful not to be amazed. Anyone could be obsessed by its beauty.

Mt.Binacayan guide

Long story short – Since we have already conquered the third highest mountain here in the Philippines.  I think we’ve underestimated the trail of Mt. Binacayan. It’s not that easy to hike while rain is pouring down the muddy trail. It made our hike more so complicated. The difficulty of Mt. Binacayan is best for newbie hikers anyway since its spec is minor. I think one of the reasons why we were having a hard time to move upward it’s because it was raining that time plus the muddy trail and the huge sharp limestones angled for about 70 to 90 degree required outdoor skills, climbing tactics, and death-defying stunts. All of these are mandatory.

There are a lot of obstacles especially sharp edges limestones and rock formation that requires a lot of effort, stamina, strength, and energy before to get you to the summit. So, you have to be very careful every time you step on the rock and make sure it’s strong enough since once you commit a mistake you could possibly fall into the cliff.

Mt Bincayan Guide

My body requires more stamina as we continue to move upward to the peak of Mt. Binacayan which is 424 meters above sea level. The steepness of this rocky mountain makes our legs more tired so we have to rest more often. It took us 45 minutes to reach the viewing point.

Gloves are very important and required to use since you have to climb into sharp limestones. There are several stores selling gloves in front of DENR for PHP 50.00/pair.

The trail is muddy and slippery so I highly recommend wearing hiking shoes instead of sandals because sandals might not give you enough support for your feet during the hike.

Mt Binacayan sea of clouds
The mandatory “talikod” pose with a sea of clouds in the background

We have reached the first peak around 7:45 AM. The scenic view and the stunning sea of clouds are just so amazing. We couldn’t help ourselves but stare the witness the beauty of nature before the sunrise.

Who says you have to travel for a long journey just to see this beauty if it’s just an hour away from the populated and busy city of Metro Manila. City dwellers should visit and witness the magnificent and beautiful indeed nature once for a while.

After 3 hours of hiking, walking, crawling, climbing, technical jumping and route finding. We have successfully reached the summit of Mt Binacayan. A marvelous view of Rizal Mountains can be seen after the exhausting hike. It was a hike-worthy experience because the panoramic view of Sierra Madre mountains from the summit makes our tired feet and exhausted body alive. The feeling we were over the white clouds hovering the greenery is really fulfilling.

The summit of Mt. Bincayan is composed of limestones and sharp rocky ridges that makes it difficult to reach. Nevertheless, the view from the summit is totally worth the hike. You can see the panoramic view of Rizal mountains from the top. It is truly an amazing gift that we have to cherish.

We start to descent at around 10:00 AM. Originally, our plan was a twin hike from Mt Binacayan to Mt. Pamitian but we were all tired and exhausted. So we decided to just visit Mt.Pamitian on our next hike.

After the exhausting journey to the summit of Mt. Binacayan, we headed to Wawa dam to clean our shoes covered by muds.
